How Summer Can Affect Your Gut Health: Simple Ways to Support Your Microbiome

Summer can affect your gut health in more ways than you might realise. By the time August arrives, many people notice their digestion feels a little different. Meals that normally agree with them suddenly leave them feeling heavier, bowel habits become less predictable and the sense of routine that existed before summer seems a long way off.

These changes rarely come down to one indulgent meal or a single late night. More often, they reflect the cumulative effect of several weeks of small changes to everyday habits. Eating out more often, travelling, staying up later, drinking a little more alcohol and moving less than usual can all influence the gut microbiome, particularly when they occur together over several weeks.1

The encouraging part is that the gut microbiome is highly adaptable. Just as it responds to changes in diet and lifestyle during the summer, it can also adapt as familiar routines return.

Summer Changes More Than Your Schedule

Most of us think of summer as a change in routine rather than a change in biology. Holidays replace the normal working week, meals are eaten at different times, weekends become busier and evenings stretch a little later than usual.

Many of these seasonal habits also influence the gut microbiome. What you eat, when you eat, how much fibre your diet contains, how much you drink, how well you sleep, how much you move and even the amount of stress you experience can all affect the balance and activity of the microorganisms living in your gut.1

The gut microbiome is not a fixed collection of bacteria. It is a dynamic community that responds continually to changes in diet, lifestyle and the environment. A few weeks of different eating habits and altered routines is often enough for measurable changes to occur.1

That does not mean summer is harmful for your gut. Holidays often bring opportunities to enjoy seasonal fruit and vegetables, spend more time outdoors and be physically active. However, when several aspects of your lifestyle change simultaneously, your gut microbiome adapts accordingly.

More Eating Out Often Means Less Fibre

Eating out is one of the pleasures of summer. Whether it's a barbecue with friends, a pub lunch after a walk or dinner overlooking the sea, sharing food is part of what makes the season enjoyable.

The downside is that meals eaten away from home are often lower in fibre than those prepared in your own kitchen. Restaurant and pub menus frequently favour refined carbohydrates, richer sauces and larger portions, while wholegrains, pulses and a wide variety of vegetables are less prominent.2

Although fruit and vegetables are usually available, the choices can be surprisingly limited, with many meals featuring the same familiar vegetables and side salads.

This matters because dietary fibre is the primary fuel for many of the beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. As these fibres are fermented, they produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, acetate and propionate. These compounds help nourish the cells lining the colon and contribute to maintaining the gut barrier, while also playing an important role in supporting normal immune and metabolic function.3

Average fibre intake in the UK is around 18g per day, already well below the official government recommendation of 30g per day, even before summer holidays and weekends away are taken into account.4 A few lower-fibre meals are unlikely to make a lasting difference. However, when they become the norm over several weeks, the amount of fermentable fibre reaching the gut naturally falls.

The opposite is also true. Returning to a varied, plant-rich diet provides the gut microbiome with the fibres it depends on, allowing it to adapt once again.

Travel Introduces New Foods and New Routines

Travel is another reason summer can feel different for your gut. Whether you're spending a week abroad or taking a few short breaks closer to home, travelling often means changes in food, routine and environment, all of which can influence the gut microbiome.

Trying local cuisine is one of the pleasures of travelling, and it often brings welcome variety to the diet. At the same time, unfamiliar ingredients, different cooking methods and changes in meal timing all require the gut microbiome to adapt. Research has shown that international travel can temporarily alter the composition of the gut microbiome, particularly when journeys involve significant changes in diet or episodes of travellers' diarrhoea.5

The journey itself can also have an impact. Long flights and car journeys often involve hours of sitting and fewer opportunities to move around, while meals picked up at airports and motorway services are not always rich in fibre. If your trip involves crossing time zones, jet lag introduces another layer of change. Research suggests it can disrupt the body's internal clock as well as the natural daily rhythms of the gut microbiome.6

Even simple habits such as delaying a visit to the bathroom because you're travelling or out sightseeing can contribute to temporary constipation.

Fortunately, for most healthy people, these changes are short-lived. As familiar routines return, the gut microbiome begins adapting once again.

Alcohol, Hydration and Sleep: Three Summer Habits That Influence the Gut Microbiome

These three often go hand in hand during the summer months. Holidays, barbecues and longer evenings can mean a little more alcohol, warmer weather increases fluid requirements and later nights can disrupt regular sleep patterns. Each influences the gut microbiome in different ways and, when they occur together, their combined effects may become more noticeable.

Alcohol

Enjoying a drink while on holiday or at a summer gathering is part of the season for many people. An occasional drink is unlikely to have a lasting effect on the gut microbiome, but research has shown that regular or heavier alcohol consumption is associated with changes in the balance and diversity of gut bacteria.7 Excessive alcohol intake has also been linked with increased intestinal permeability, meaning the gut lining may become less effective as a barrier.8

Alcohol can also increase fluid losses by reducing the body's ability to retain water. Combined with warmer weather and increased sweating, this makes staying hydrated even more important.

Hydration

Fluid intake is easy to overlook during the summer. Hot weather, increased physical activity and travelling can all increase fluid requirements, while busy days often mean drinking less than you realise.

Drinking enough water supports normal bowel function by helping to maintain stool consistency, particularly when dietary fibre intake is increasing. Mild dehydration has been identified as one of several factors that may contribute to constipation.9 Large population studies have also found associations between water intake and differences in the composition of the gut microbiome, although more research is needed to understand exactly how hydration influences these microbial communities.10

Fibre and fluid work together, so increasing one without the other is unlikely to provide the same digestive benefits.

Sleep

Sleep is another part of the picture that often changes during the summer. Longer evenings, warmer nights, holidays and jet lag can all affect both sleep quality and sleep timing.

The gut microbiome follows its own daily rhythm, with different groups of bacteria becoming more or less active throughout the day. These natural cycles are closely linked to the body's internal clock, meal timing and sleep patterns.6 When those rhythms are disrupted, changes in the gut microbiome may follow.

Poor sleep can also influence the foods we choose the next day. Research has shown that even partial sleep deprivation increases appetite and is associated with a greater intake of highly processed, energy-dense foods, often at the expense of fibre-rich options.11 Over time, this provides another route through which changes in sleep habits may influence the gut microbiome.

None of these factors is likely to have a lasting impact on its own. However, when several occur together over the course of a summer, they can help explain why your digestion may feel different by the time autumn approaches.

Your Gut Microbiome Responds Faster Than You Might Think

One of the most remarkable features of the gut microbiome is how quickly it responds to changes in diet.

A landmark study published in Nature found that switching participants to either an entirely animal-based or entirely plant-based diet produced measurable changes in the gut microbiome within around 24 hours of food reaching the colon. Just as importantly, many of those changes began to reverse once participants returned to their usual eating habits.12

This tells us two important things. A fortnight of different meals while travelling or enjoying the summer really can influence the gut microbiome. Equally, returning to familiar eating habits allows it to adapt again.

The gut microbiome is highly dynamic. Rather than remaining fixed, it continually responds to the foods we eat and the routines we follow. That adaptability is one of its greatest strengths.

Variety Matters More Than Perfection

One of the strongest dietary predictors of a diverse gut microbiome is the variety of plant foods you eat over the course of a week. The widely discussed goal of 30 different plant foods comes from research showing that people who regularly consumed a greater diversity of plant foods tended to have a more diverse gut microbiome than those eating fewer than ten.13

Greater microbial diversity is generally associated with a gut microbiome that is better able to adapt when everyday habits such as diet, travel and routine change.1

Thirty different plant foods may sound ambitious until you start counting them properly. It's not just fruit and vegetables that contribute. Wholegrains, beans, lentils, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, tea and coffee all count too. A breakfast of porridge topped with pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds and ground flaxseed already provides four different plant foods before you've added any fruit.

Rather than striving for perfection every day, think about variety across the week. Adding one or two new plant foods to each shopping trip is often enough to increase diversity without dramatically changing the way you eat.

Helping Your Gut Settle Back Into Routine

If your digestion feels a little different towards the end of the summer, there's usually no need for a dramatic reset. The gut microbiome responds best to steady, consistent habits rather than extremes.

A few simple changes can help support the transition back to your normal routine:

  • Count plants, not calories. Aim for around 30 different plant foods across the week and keep a rough tally.13 Focusing on variety rather than restriction naturally encourages a wider range of ingredients in your meals.
  • Reintroduce fibre gradually. If you've been eating less fibre than usual while away, increase your intake over a week or two rather than all at once. This gives your gut microbiome and digestive system time to adapt and may help reduce temporary bloating or discomfort.
  • Integrate fermented plant fibres. Add modest portions of garlic, onions, oats, or slightly underripe bananas to routine meals.
  • Stay well hydrated. Warmer weather, travel and increasing your fibre intake can all increase your need for fluids. Drinking enough water supports normal bowel function and complements a fibre-rich diet.9
  • Build regular movement back into your day. Physical activity has been associated with greater microbial diversity and also supports normal bowel function.15
  • Return to a regular sleep routine. As holidays come to an end, consistent bedtimes and mealtimes help your body clock settle, supporting the natural daily rhythms that influence the gut microbiome.6

None of these habits needs to be perfect. The aim is simply to give your gut microbiome the consistency it has been missing over the previous few weeks.
